Fiat’s 124 Spider Gets The Abarth Treatment

Abarth, Fiat’s tuning department and home to quite possibly the greatest badge in all of motoring. Its a scorpion for crying out loud, there is no possible way that won’t be awesome? The latest Abarth creation is probably one of it’s most anticipated models ever. The Fiat Abarth 124 Spider. For those of you that need a refresher, the 124 is the Fiat version of Mazda’s MX5 Miata. They share the same chassis. In base trim the Fiat gets stiffer suspension, new bodywork and a different engine. Fiat ditches the Mazda power-plants in favor of their own 1.4 liter turbocharged unit. This produces a pedestrian 138 horsepower, right between Mazda’s 129 hp 1.5 liter and the 158 hp 2.0 liter.

The Abarth 124 Spider sees its power increase to 170. While the ride height stays the same the suspension does get tweaked with Abarth springs. The exhaust now features quad tips and you can only get a limited slip diff. As an homage to it’s rally teams Fiat has painted the hood matte black. It is worth noting that this is the European Spec version. The US Spec is coming soon with more power! We’re guessing 200ish horsepower. The Abarth 124 Spider will undoubtedly check all the boxes. It will be fantastic to drive, sound epic, have italianness everywhere and will have the extra power the Miata needs. The only thing left to do is for Mazda to make a MazdaSpeed Miata. Turbo the 2.0 liter maybe make about 250 hp? Who here wouldn’t sign up for that?
