In the long run scheme of things, the new MX-5 RF won’t go down in the annals of history as the greatest car ever made. Or the rarest. Or the lightest MX-5 even. But it will undoubtedly go down as one of, if not the best and most stunning MX-5, especially after winning World Design Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show.
Personally, I’m a fan. So much so that I gave the Mazda representatives my business card to call me when they know about a price. Not kidding. This car is absolutely stunning. MX-5s with a hard top have always been good looking, but this thing just beats them all. And the buttresses look like something off a Lamborghini Gallardo.
Here’s the top in action.
There’s no power bump with this version as many had hoped, but honestly who cares? You can take the car to a tuning shop to get the 200hp out of this engine that would make it quite literally the perfect car. So this extra 100 pounds from the targa top is null and void at that point. Mated with the 6-speed trans and you have automotive and design perfection.
This MX-5 is set to become an absolute monster on the back roads, but not give you the full rag top feeling that turns off some buyers. If you were looking for a perfect MX-5 with this new generation, this is it. When are you going to the dealer to drop off your down payment? I’ll be there first so get in line.
