The GT40, A Car Built Entirely Out Of Spite.

Ford is returning to Le Mans later this year with it’s all new GT. The original GT was built out of spite towards Ferrari. If you don’t know the story by now here’s a quick refresher. In 1963 Ford attempted to buy Ferrari. A deal was actually in place until the 11th hour when Enzo backed out of the deal. Incensed by this, Henry Ford II decided if he couldn’t have Ferrari, he would crush them at their most important race. The race was the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the car was the GT40. The GT40 had one purpose, crush Ferrari. After a couple years with teething issues, Ford went on to win Le Mans in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969. Ferrari hasn’t won overall¬†at Le Mans Since.

There is one part of this video that is misleading. Carrol Shelby’s now famous quote, “Next year Ferrari’s Ass is mine.” That actually occurred after losing the world championship to Ferrari in 1964 leading to the 1965 Season with his Daytona coupes. But that is a story for a different day.
