World Record: Drifting At 190 MPH

The previous world record for drifting was held at 135mph set by Polish drifter Jakub Przygoński, according to Guinness World Records. Nissan has just SMASHED that record in a 1,380 horsepower Nissan GTR Nismo on top of the Fujairah International Airport asphalt in the United Arab Emirates.

The car is a collaboration between the Nismo team and Japanese aftermarket company, GReddy. They were able to put down enough power, all to the rear wheels obviously, to set a new world record of 189.5 mph while maintaining a drift angle of 30 degrees. The monstrous drift car was driven by professional drifter Masato Kawabata, who competes in the D1 Grand Prix.

Fujairah International Airport was strategically chosen for its 3km long airstrip which was deemed to be sufficiently long enough for the challenge. From the outset, Nissan wanted to perform the drift at a speed of more than 300km/h and Kawabata, who leads in the Japanese drifting series for Team Tokyo, was chosen from a group of highly specialized competition drivers.

This announcement is hot on the heels of the new 2017 Nissan GTR that was announced at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. That version of the GTR comes in at a more down to earth 565 HP and 467 lb-ft of torque.
