This Chevy Camaro Just Beat A Hypercar Around The Nurburgring.

The line from where we found this was “Remember when American cars only went in straight lines? Yeah, not any more.” Truth be told, American cars shook that stigma years ago, but the old guard seems to continue to trumpet this falsehood as if it’s gospel. News flash: American cars have been able to corner for decades.

Now, though, American cornering performance is coming more to the forefront with so many performance-minded models in each and every lineup. Just to name 3 off the top of my head, you have the Dodge Viper ACR which holds more track records than any other production car, the Ford Mustang GT350 and GT350R which I’ve been able to drive and completely boggle the mind, and the last generation Chevy Camaro Z28 which has as much road holding grip as a Porsche 918 Sypder. And that’s a great transition because there’s a Chevy Camaro, called the ZL1, that just stormed through a Nurburgring lap in under 7 minutes and 30 seconds (7:29.60)

That is an insanely fast time, but what did it beat? We always compare when it comes to ‘ring times, especially since this is an American car, so here’s a short list of what it beat according to Nurburgringlaptimes.com:

1. Mercedes SLS AMG GT
2. Ford Shelby GT350R
3. Pagani Zonda F
4. Koenigsegg CCX
5. Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

In fact, the last generation of the ZL1 did the lap in 7:41.27 making this generation a full 11+ seconds faster since it did it in 2011. Holy crap. It also beat 2 hypercars in the Koenigsegg CCX and the Pagani Zonda F. It even beat the last generation Z28 Camaro, the same one that was mind-blowingly fast by muscle car standards, by almost 8 seconds. Hell, the ZL1 that set this 7:29 lap isn’t even the top of the heap for Camaro performance. I think it’s safe to say that when the new Z28 comes out, we’re going to be blown away by the time.

Americans can turn my friends. Let’s put this dumbass stereotype to bed, shall we?
