Aston Martin Sweeps GTE Qualifying In Bahrain. Celebrates By Standing Still.

Darren Turner and teammate Jonny Adam set precisely the same time of 1:56.953 in Bahrain WEC GTE qualifying to take Aston Martin’s fourth pole of the season, 0.128 seconds ahead of teammates Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen in the #95 sister car. Not to be out done Pedro Lamy’s last lap effort was enough to give Aston Martin pole in GTE-AM. Aston Martin promptly celebrated by making a video for something called the mannequin challenge.

I’m not entirely certain what the mannequin challenge is, but it appears to be sweeping the globe. According to a cursory Wikipedia search the mannequin challenge is a viral Internet video trend where people remain frozen in action like mannequins while a video is recorded, usually with the song “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd playing in the background. The hashtag #MannequinChallenge was used for popular social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram. It is believed that the phenomenon was started by students in Jacksonville, Florida on October 12, 2016.

Not really sure why, but today it looks like it has invaded my corner of the universe. After sweeping Pole Position in both GT Classes at Bahrain, Aston Martin has decided to get in on the action (inaction?). As much as I want to slam this as some sort of internet fad the video is kinda cool.

Aston Martin still has a very slim chance at winning the GTE-AM title. Sitting 25 points behind the Ferrari Trio of Emmanuel Collard, Francois Perrodo and Rui Agua. Aston needs their team of Lamy, Paul Dalla Lana and Mathias Lauda to finish first while the Ferrari DNF’s.
