The Alpine A110 Is Completely Hateful

So the French are all set to debut a brand new sports car at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s from a company called Alpine and they’re supposedly to Renault what AMG is to Mercedes. They were apparently a big deal back in the day but you haven’t really heard from them much in recent years. Yes Renault has had success in F1, but literally none of that technology has found its way to the road. Plus Renault which is about as relevant in America as escargot. Thing of it is all of the American Journals are going gaga for this thing which is going to be called the A110. I have slightly mixed feelings about it.

Some are saying this is the lightweight French sports car we’ve been waiting for. Who is this we? I certainly haven’t been longing for a French sports car. I have literally never met anyone at any car show, press event or race track who has ever said anything about waiting for a French sports car. The French are to sports cars as the as Americans are to subtlety. Nobody thinks, I want a sports car but I don’t want anything German, British, Italian, American or Japanese. Anyone legitimately waiting for a French sports car is not right in the head.

The A110’s proportions are off. Not to mention the Front and the Rear look like they were designed by 2 different people. 2 People that were equally drunk.

Then there is the elephant in the room. Most of my esteemed colleagues are lusting after the A110 like it is a once in a lifetime beauty queen. For the life of me I can not understand why. Overall it looks soft, the front is to busy and the back looks unfinished. I know its supposed to be a retro modern design, it is supposed to harken back to the glory days of Alpine. Not to be overly blunt but I could honestly couldn’t give 2 shits about Renault or Alpine. I actively root against anything with a Renault badge in F1 and as for Alpine, wake me up when they actually become relevant again. And don’t use their recent foray into LMP2. They had nothing to do with that car apart from a graphics package.

I won’t lie, the A110 isn’t even available yet and it is quickly rising up the ranks of my most hated vehicles. The fact that its French or that its ugly or that it has no manual isn’t even the worst part about this car. The worst part is Alpine is targeting the Porsche 718. Alpine hasn’t released a road car in over 21 years and when they finally do they’re going to take on arguably the best sports car on sale today? I applaud your pluck but there is absolutely zero chance the A110 is better than a 718, zero.

I really don’t get the buzz around this car. Everyone, including people I know are intelligent, sane, rational human beings love this thing. I do not understand why, I really don’t.  Hate is not a strong enough word to describe my feelings for this car. I mega loathe the A110!

  1. I get you you are expressing your opinion, but in this current age, the ‘we’ you refer to is an international audience, for example I am reading shifting lanes articles regularly and I live in australia where Renault’s great hot hatches are obviously present on the roads.
