Jeremy Clarkson Hints That You Might Get Disappointed With The Grand Tour Again

The first episode of The Grand Tour exceeded everyone’s already very high expectations of the new show. Everyone except for someone at the BBC and Jenson Button, to be exact. With the first episode out of the way expectations for the second episode was also very high. However, when we saw the second episode we were pretty let down, just like many other people on the internet. It had a slow chit-chatty start with South African inside jokes, followed by a stunning Aston Martin Vulcan film, but was capped off with a drawn out “Operation Desert Stumble” film that wasn’t very much car related and was poorly pieced together.

With much negative reviews online Jeremy Clarkson took to his newly developed car website platform, Drivetribe, to respond to what those critics, including us, have to say about episode two:

Hello everyone

Show two of the Grand Tour is very car light. And that happens again in the Barbados film later in the series.

We do this on purpose to entertain the countless people who invariably say, when I sit next to them at a party, “I like your show but why do you put cars on it?” – Jeremy Clarkson

Firstly, we love that the trio are listening to what critics are saying about the show, and they seem to be humbly taking the constructive criticism that’s out there. However, we don’t believe there are a large group of people out there who are confused with why the automotive element is necessary for the trio to be successful. The reason the trio are successful is because of their adventures with cars throughout Top Gear’s best years (2002-2015). Their core fans are automotive enthusiasts who love to see fast cars being strung out around a track and also love to see what these three guys can do with very old and dilapidated cars. We can’t fathom why they would deviate from a tried and true strategy unless it’s for the sheer exercise of trying things out, and perhaps that’s what the second episode really is: an experiment.

Secondly, it’s good that Clarkson is tempering expectations by saying a ‘car light’ episode will happen again in the future. This Barbados film might be the one with Jet-skis and where the Boys drop a car from a crane, as seen from the very first trailer.

We all realize that not all of The Grand Tour episodes will be gold. We’re just glad that the Boys are back on screen to entertain all of us again. Episode three is just around the corner and we can’t wait to give you our take on it when it comes out on Friday.
