2015 VW Golf GTI Initial Impressions

We’ll be driving the all new 2015 VW Golf GTI for the next week. The reigning hot hatch champ of all time (until the Focus RS arrives to destroy all) is finally here for us to review. The Night Blue Metallic GTI is equipped with a 2.0 liter turbo, cranking out 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This specific one comes equipped with the 6-speed Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe (Direct Shift Gearbox or DSG for short), a dual-clutch mechanism that shifts almost instinctively.

Initial impressions are positive. The agile DSG can quickly and easily put you in the sweet power band, making this car seem more powerful than what’s on paper. The suspension is firm and sporty but comfortable enough to withstand the typical aged suburban roads. The build quality is nice with some soft-touch materials in the right places. The flat-bottomed steering wheel is such a joy to handle, and if you close your eyes (not recommended while driving) you can pretend you’re driving the GTI’s distant and rich cousin, the Audi R8.

We’ll give you a more in-depth review in the upcoming weeks. For now, enjoy the pics of the iconic hatch below
