If this happens, Chevy has a monster on it’s hands.
I, as well as the rest of Shifting Lanes, drove the Chevy SS last fall during a two day span where we also drove a Mercedes AMG GT S, Bentley Continental V8, Chevy Corvette, BMW i8, and Nissan GTR, among others. The fact that we remember it at all is a testament to how awesome the SS really is. Currently, the SS has a 415HP, 6.2-liter LS3 V8. Take my word for it, the SS is no slouch. With a manual gear box and the sounds it makes from it’s tailpipes, the SS is a supremely awesome car. One I would personally own if I had the funds to have a second car to daily drive so the WRX would be come a weekend warrior.
However, we are supremely sad that the SS will be going away for good at the end of the 2017 model year. Though, it seems Chevy might want to send it out with a quite literal bang. According to a report from GM authority, the SS is looking like it might get a 580HP, supercharged 6.2L LSA V8. Can I get a HELL YEA?!
We’re going to take this one with a grain of salt, but it’s certainly plausible. We’ve heard mumblings from sources inside the Elizabeth assembly, responsible for building the VF Holden Commodore Series II and our Chevrolet SS, that more power is coming stateside for the sedan’s final model year.
2017 will indeed be the final year for the Zeta based Holden Commodore, and the Chevrolet SS. While Holden is no doubt planning a slew of final editions to send off the Commodore as locals know it, Yanks may be in for LSA power. That’s right, the source has stated the 6.2-liter LSA supercharged V8 may find a home under the hood of the 2017 Chevrolet SS.
Should the LSA make its way to the 2017 SS performance sedan, it would mean a major power bump. Currently, the Chevrolet SS performance sedan makes do with only 415 hp from the 6.2-liter LS3 V8. If Holden Special Vehicles is any indicator, power could increase to a healthy 580 hp from the supercharged LSA.
I only have 3 words to GM: “MAKE,” “THIS,” and “HAPPEN.” Should we see the SS up near 600HP, that should put yet another challenger in the Hellcat/Camaro ZL1/Mustang GT350/Anything else with over 500HP discussion. Hopefully, we also get some of those final editions with some upgraded suspension packages to make this thing a real track beast that you can take to the grocery store.
If the currently model is any indication, it’s going to at minimum sound incredible.
