Chevy’s New ZL1 Will Be Faster Than A Corvette

Chevy is doing some absolute magic these days. Saying “GM Crap” these days is pretty much just the height of ignorance. They are killing it in the mid-sized segment with the newly improved Malibu, they are expanding their horizons on engine choices with the Camaro 2.0 liter turbo, and now they are making Camaros that are faster than Corvettes.

The new Camaro ZL1 is a 650hp monster that will be available as a 2017 model for a shade over $62,000 ($62,135). Initially announced with 640hp, Chevy upped that claim with testing. Now we’re getting some answer on the speed figures and it’s pretty mind-boggling.

The top-of-the-line 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 will rocket to 60 in 3.5 seconds, come back to a half in 107 feet, blast through the quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds, and round the skidpad at 1.02 g (Coupe version with the available ten-speed automatic transmission).

Don’t need all that muscle? Chevy will gladly hook you up with the 1LE package on either a six-cylinder Camaro LT or eight-cylinder Camaro SS. The 2017 Chevy Camaro LT 1LE will hit 60 in 5.2 seconds, return to a halt in 112 feet, and pull 0.97 g on the skidpad. The SS 1LE is even more impressive, of course, reaching 60 in 4.2 seconds, stopping again in 107 feet, and pulling 1.02 g of cornering force.

But what’s being missed in all the shuffle is the fact that this new Camaro will be faster than a Corvette 0-60. A Z51 Stingray Corvette will do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds according to its figures. This Camaro beats it by 0.1 seconds. Now I can absolutely hear everyone saying that the Stingray is down nearly 200HP to the Camaro, but what’s really important here is that the new Corvette is as close to a supercar that Chevy has ever come with the ‘vette name. To have ANY Camaro reach that type of performance from factory is a monumental achievement.

We can only hope to drive this thing in the near future. Soiled pants to be confirmed at a later date.
