Oil Change Scam. Shop Gets Busted For Fraud

Oil changes ensure a long and happy life for your engine. Manufacturers have made it relatively easy so you can do this yourself: 1. Lift the car 2. Undo drain plug and drain the oil 3. Replace old filter and old o-rings 4. Tighten drain plug and 5. Refill with new oil. This is such an easy task the only problem you’ll run into is deciding whether the effort is worth your time.

The ease of this maintenance procedure sprouted chains like Jiffy Lube, Firestone, Pep Boys, etc, that offer oil changes for very low cost. However, with that wide appeal of low cost and convenience comes some questionable players, interested in scamming you out of your money.

Enter Economy Lube, a Canadian automotive service chain that offers quick fluid changes for a reasonable price. The following video clip shows that though their prices may be low, they are quick to up-sell their other services, even when you don’t need it. What’s worse is they won’t even perform some of the services they have charged you for.

So the next time you go get your oil changed, be careful what you might be signing up for.
