As we continue to gear up (off color pun EXTREMELY intended) for The Grand Tour, we’re looking back on our top 10 favorite old Top Gear episodes when a certain 3 blokes were the masters of ceremonies on the BBC staple.
Clarkson, Hammond, and May made many trips and had many adventures on their show. Before Top Gear, people went on road trips, but you could make an argument that they were the single greatest driver of making the modern road trip fun again. People would watch Top Gear and take drives to no where just because they’d want to find an amazing driving road or to see things they hadn’t before. Truly, they were an influence at the very minimum.
So how appropriate that our #6 moment was when they found what is considered by many to be the greatest driving road of all time. They brought 3 excellent cars for the task: a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24. After finding a few good roads and realizing that James’ car was the completely wrong choice for a long road trip, they happened upon automotive nirvana. The Stelvio pass is 15 miles of switchbacks which amount to a supercar special stage on a mountainside. Epic.
