The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA for short) is having their upcoming SEMA Show in Las Vegas on November 1-4. This is the place where the automotive specialty industry comes together each year to showcase their latest and greatest aftermarket products. This is also the time when automakers bring their marquee vehicles and dress them up in their Sunday’s Best, showcasing the true potential of what their products can become via the enthusiasm of the aftermarket.
For this year’s SEMA, Mazda has just sent out two teasers, each with a different take on their latest Mazda MX-5 (Miata) platform. The first is called the MX-5 RF Kuro concept. The RF is short for Retractable Fastback, and we saw this when it was first unveiled to the public in the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
This time the RF has been given the Kuro treatment, which means ‘Charcoal’ in Japanese. According to Mazda’s press release, the Kuro concept will be riding on “17×7.5-inch RAYS forged wheels, 215/45R17 BFGoodrich Rival G-Force tires and the adjustable suspension from the Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires.”
Based on the image, the MX-5 RF Kuro concept just screams “Sexy-Future-Classic.” The semi-matte metallic finish help accentuate the smooth flowing lines of the front and rear fender bulges, while the new retractable roof gives it a more classic sports car look. If you squint hard enough you may see the spirit of the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO just beneath the shell.
The other vehicle that Mazda is bringing is their MX-5 Speedster Evolution. They’ve brought a Speedster concept to the 2015 SEMA show, but this version sheds another 100 pounds bringing the total weight just under 2,000 pounds. The lack of a windshield and the retractable top has certainly contributed to the weight loss while also lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity. This one will certainly make for one hell of a ride experience, even when you’re only going 20 mph.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on what comes out in SEMA this year and we’re curious what other cool concepts will be on display. But so far Mazda has stolen our hearts with these two MX-5 concepts, and they’ve made us fall in love with the Miata even more.
